Frequently asked questions about Overhaul kit Yanmar 6LP 12-valve:

  • How to select the correct Big-End Bearings for my Yanmar 6LP marine diesel engine?

The connecting rod bearings of the Yanmar 6LP can be different on each journal, and the new ones should be purchased after inspecting each old shell, as shown below. In case the bearing size is unknown, refer to the following table.

  • What is the tightening torque of the big-end bearing caps?

Each bolt should be tightened in two steps: The first tightening is 375 kgf · cm (37Nm), then an additional 90° is required.

  • What is the tightening torque of the main bearing caps?

Each bolt should be tightened in two steps: The first tightening is 1050 kgf · cm (102.90 Nm), then an additional 90° is required.

  • How to choose the correct head gasket for my Yanmar 6LP 12-valve marine diesel engine?

The Yanmar 6LP series has gaskets with notches. 1 notch means Mark I, 3 notches is a Mark III gasket, and finally, 5 notches is a Mark V. Each grade represents a different thickness. The thickness of a newly installed cylinder head gasket is: MK “1”: 1.15mm to 1.25mm, MK “3” 1.25mm to 1.35mm, and MK “5” is 1.35mm to 1.45mm.

  • What is the tightening torque and sequence of the cylinder head bolts of the Yanmar 6LP (12-valve) marine diesel?

Before installation, some oil has to be applied to the bolt’s thread and the cylinder head bolt seat. The 26 cylinder head bolts should be tightened several times, in the order shown on the illustration. The tightening torque of the cylinder head bolts is 700 kgf · cm (68.65 Nm). In case a cylinder head bolt does not satisfy the specified torque, replace that bolt. Mark the front side of each cylinder head bolt with paint. Retighten the cylinder head bolts by 90°, following the order shown in the illustration. Retighten the bolts further by 90°. Check that the painted marks face rearwards.
