Cooling System Volvo Penta
The cooling system of a Volvo Penta marine engine, whether it is a marine diesel or a petrol engine, is one of the most crucial subsystems, which can lead to serious mechanical failures if left neglected. Generally, the engines can be raw-water cooled or fresh-water cooled. A raw water cooling system is a direct cooling system, where the water of the sea/river/lake is pumped into the engine in order to cool it. On the other hand, a freshwater cooling system cools indirectly a cooling fluid or the engine oil, using radiators.
A raw-water cooling system is much simpler and lower cost to maintain in the short term; however, the more modern engines run better in the long term using more advanced cooling systems. A typical layout of a raw-water cooling system found on an old Volvo Penta marine diesel is made out of the following components: A raw water pump, a thermostat, and an exhaust elbow. Their main disadvantage is the corrosion and scale buildup.
A freshwater cooling system, known also as a closed loop system, is made of the same components as a raw water system, plus a circulation pump and radiators. The radiators are usually counterflow tubular systems; on one circuit, raw water passes, and on the other side, at a counterflow direction, oil or cooling fluid is being cooled through indirect contact. That way, the corrosion is limited within that closed system. If protected anodically, the corrosion is minimized.
Considering the above, in a cooling system, you expect to find raw water pumps and circulation pumps, hoses for the interconnection of them, heat exchangers, thermostats, expansion tanks, and mixing elbows. Poseidon Marine has offered steady raw water pump and circulation pump parts since our foundation. Our principle has always been to offer the highest possible materials in order to ensure your repair lasts over time. Poseidon Marine has been offering these parts to every corner of the world. From Auckland, New Zealand, to Togiak and Anchorage in Alaska, we manage to deliver the highest quality water pump parts at the right price. Apart from our own line of kits, we proudly offer Crom Marine and SLP from Sweden, as well as Recmar parts.
Among the cooling system components, radiators occupy a very significant part of our range. Our main partners for this line of parts are SLP and Crom Marine, both exhibiting supreme Swedish quality. On top of that, SLP offers a 3-year warranty, a very serious element to consider when investing in such parts. Crom Marine offers some retrofit modifications, like the Martec coolers, that would convert your old Volvo Penta MD11 from raw-water cooling to freshwater cooling. SLP offers a great range of heat exchanger units, oil coolers, intercoolers, and rubber parts, like hoses. This premium line of products enriches our inventory with reliable and quality products.
One of the most basic components of every cooling system is the thermostat. Poseidon Marine offers a wide range of thermostats for various petrol and diesel Volvo Penta engines. These thermostats are made mostly by Recmar and Crom Marine. A good-quality thermostat is not only made to last long but also to operate under the proper operating temperature; opening too early will keep the engine cold, while delaying will make the engine overheat.
Here are some popular thermostats that you will find at Poseidon Marine:

Frequently Asked Questions About Cooling System Volvo Penta:
-
Why is my Volvo Penta engine overheating?
The reasons can be many, while the remedy to this problem is by checking each cooling component, starting from the easiest to check. A good start would be from the seawater filter, if any, to erase the possibility of clogging due to debris, plastic, or mussel overgrowth. The impeller would be the next suspect, especially if the temperature shows up at a higher load (RPM). From there onwards, it depends if you are on a freshwater or a raw-water cooling system.
-
How to maintain and clean a Volvo Penta oil cooler or a heat exchanger?
It is strongly recommended to inspect your radiators every 100–200 hours of operation, or annually, at the beginning of the season. In order to perform an inspection, you need to disconnect the unit from the system and drain it. Dismount the unit by removing its mounting bolts. Remove the caps to check for corrosion, scale, clogging, and barnacle buildup. Using a small bottle brush, clean each tube and rinse with water. If there is marine growth or scale, please proceed to a chemical cleaning with a descaler, as per the instructions of the chemical.
-
When is it time to check, maintain, or replace my Volvo Penta circulation pump?
Inefficient cooling, heat spikes, and leaks would be signs that your circulation pump is due for a rebuild or a replacement. An unpleasant wobbling would mean that the pump’s bearing has reached its lifecycle, while a leak would be a sign to consider a mechanical seal.
-
How often should I replace your Volvo Penta thermostat?
Generally, we have observed that a thermostat is replaced every 2–3 years on saltwater use or commercial boats. That period can extend to 4–5 years on freshwater-cooled systems or boats with low hours and consistent maintenance. Temperature fluctuation, difficulty warming up the engine, or overheating are common signs of a faulty thermostat. Make sure to order its installation gaskets.
-
Is it easy to repair my Volvo Penta water pump?
Small pumps with shafts up to 16 mm are easy to replace, and if you are experienced with tools, you won't even need a vise. Larger shafts, mechanical pumps, and more complicated systems may need more advanced tools, technical knowledge, and workshop manuals with precise information.
