What is the process to disassemble the Volvo Penta circulation pump 831742?
First of all, you need to remove the screws keeping the pump on the engine block. Using a puller, remove the pulley of the pump. As soon as you remove the locking wire of the bearing and shaft assembly, you can then place the pump on a vise to press out the shaft assembly. The impeller can then be pressed out from the shaft. The following scheme depicts the proper way the pump needs to be placed in order to be torn apart.

How to assemble a Volvo Penta AQ165 AQ170 water pump 831742?
The assembly process is technically the reverse process of the dismantling.
(1) With the pump placed upside down, press firmly the bearing and shaft assembly until the bearing slotting is aligned with the housing’s locking wire notch, then fit the wire.
(2) Apply Hylomar Blue or any similar glue around the mechanical seal and press it into the housing. Smear the contact surface of the carbon washer against the impeller wear ring with molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) mixed with mineral oil SAE 30. The molybdenum disulfide must be completely dry before fitting.
(3) Make sure that the wear ring is fitted properly onto the impeller, and then press the impeller until it lies evenly with the pump’s surface, or up to 0.4mm below the face of the pump’s body. During that process, the lower end of the shaft should be against a counterhold, as per the figure.
(4) Turn the pump the other way around. Place a counterhold under the shaft end in the impeller hole and press on the hub. The distance between the pulley’s face and the pump’s body should be adjusted to 120mm.
(5) Before mounting the pump, make sure that the pump can be rotated without great resistance.
