Everything you need to maintain your trimming system and other hydraulic parts.

The trimming system on a Volvo Penta sterndrive adjusts the angle of the outdrive in relation to the boat’s transom. The main components of the trimming system are the trim motor & pump, trim cylinders (trim rams, hydraulic cylinders), the wire harness, and its control panel.

The trim motor moves the hydraulic pump to create sufficient hydraulic pressure, which is required to adjust the position of the Volvo Penta outdrive. The hydraulic oil, usually an ATF, is stored in a plastic reservoir, while the pump and motor assembly is attached on a bracket.

The trim cylinder rams retract or extend, changing the angle of the outdrive relative to the transom. The hydraulic fluid is transferred from the pump to the rams via hydraulic hoses, linkages, and oil distributors (splitters).

The wiring harness of the trim system of a Volvo Penta includes all relays, solenoids, trim position sensors, cabling, and other components related to the trimming system.

Finally, the trimming system is comprised of a control panel with instrumentation. Electronic panels, indicators, and digital displays are converting all this data received into valuable information for us.

Here are some basic functions of the trimming system:

When an outdrive is at its trim-down position, that pushes the bow down, helping the boat plane faster. On the contrary, a trim-up position lifts the bow out, reducing drag at higher speeds and improving fuel efficiency. Consequently, fine-tuning of the outdrive can contribute to better fuel economy, since less work (power) is required to maintain the same speed.

If the sea is rough, a trim-down position will make the ride smoother, since the hull will cut through the waves instead of crashing over them. Moreover, the trimming system is also used to stabilize the boat, especially on higher speeds.

Last but not least, the trimming system will help increase the propeller thrust and help with  maneuvering when docking.

Frequently Asked Questions About Trim System Volvo Penta:

  • How does a Volvo Penta trim work?

The Volvo Penta trim system is integrated with the Electronic Vessel Control (EVC) system, doing all necessary corrections on the angle adjustments, so that your boat maintains a plane position, while not compromising comfort. At the same time, it optimizes the power output and the fuel consumption.

  • What is the automatic boat trim option on a Volvo Penta?

The Boat Trim System (BTS) with its patented interceptor technology gives you perfect control over pitch and heel with rapid response, quicker onto plane, lower fuel consumption, and a more comfortable ride. Technically, the BTS stabilizes your boat, making your ride much smoother, all without manual intervention.

  • How do Volvo Penta trim levels work?

There are 4 different trim options offered for different applications of Volvo Penta. The oldest and simplest option is the manual trim, where the user manually adjusts the trim based on the current sea conditions and their requirements. Moving on, Volvo offers the Automatic boat trim, which adjusts the heel and the pitch according to the current’s vessel speed. Then, it is the Power trim Assistant that adjusts the trim level, based on the engine’s RPM. Finally, it is the Interceptor System that intervenes in every aspect, in order to optimize the behaviour of the boat.

  • Why is my Volvo Penta outdrive dropping down on its own from the trim-up position onto the trim-down?

This is a sign of loss of pressure. If there is no obvious external leak, then your trimming cylinders may need an overhaul. Poseidon Marine offers seal kits and rams for many different models of cylinders for Volvo Penta. Some of them are: 872612, 3860881, 3857470, 3857471, 2212309, 21840806, 872837, 22187385, 22187386, and 853439.

  • How to adjust a Volvo Penta trim gauge?

The trim sender must be removed and rotated by hand until the trim gauge shows the right reading. Typically, it can be calibrated on the trim-down position, where the reading is “0” or “Down”.

  • Why is my Volvo Penta power trim not working?

First of all, we need to separate the trimming system into 3 sections: The electric parts, the hydraulic system, and the moving parts. If the system does not create pressure, you should first check if the electric motor works, or if a relay of the motor is burnt. On the hydraulic system, you should check that all connections are in place and that there is no leaking or burst hydraulic hose. Lastly, you should check your hydraulic cylinders, which might leak internally or externally. Internally means that the piston cannot maintain the pressure, and your outdrive is moving to the trim-down position. An external leak may be caused from the connection between the trimming cylinders and the hydraulic hoses, or from the cap of the cylinder.

  • How to understand that the Volvo Penta steering cylinder is leaking?

A leaking steering cylinder will not maintain the required hydraulic pressure to function properly. The most common symptoms are stiff steering, unusual noises during steering, and visible leaks.
