The saildrive layout is similar to that of the sterndrive, though its application is limited to sailboats and other boats with deeper hulls. The engines are inboard, and a shaft is transferring the power to a transmission. Then, the movement is directed vertically to a propeller, in the same way it would on any other lower unit of a sterndrive. Due to the fact that it is 100% submerged, the propulsion is much smoother, without noise or vibrations.

The saildrive system of Volvo Penta has changed very little since 1973, and is well-known for its reliability.
