The Volvo Penta MD1B, MD2B, and MD3B series is a compact diesel engine family, produced between 1970 and 1975. Its development was based on the earlier 79 mm bore MD1 and MD2 engines, keeping many of its internal components unchanged, such as the crankshaft journals, but increased the bore to 88.90 mm, achieving a displacement per cylinder of 560 cc (34.2 cu. in.), and was offered as a single cylinder engine, two-cylinder engine, and three-cylinder engine. It is a simple and straightforward engine, without electronics, featuring a gear timing; thus making it ideal for the marine industry. With a 90 mm stroke, the engine is almost “square”, but in fact it is an undersquare engine.

Due to the different engine sizes, the engine became very popular between sailboat owners, small fishing boats, and other vessels featuring an inboard or a reverse system.

The successors of the Volvo Penta MD1B, MD2B, and MD3B were the MD11 and the MD17 series. Technically, it is the same engine block, slightly revised head, and the addition of cylinder liners. A thing to be missed from the later engine line-up is the single-cylinder engine.
