Not many people know that the inventors of the first MerCruiser Alpha sterndrive and the first Volvo Penta Aquamatic were once close friends, who took separate paths for the eyes of a woman. The stars of this story are Carl Kiekhaefer and Jim Wynne. The latter took advantage of a situation, using the research and the innovative ideas of Carl, which were still unpatented, and managed to launch the first Volvo Penta Aquamatic in a very short period of time. 60 or 70 years later, this sounds like a novel, yet there is an essence of nostalgia for the 1960s. We owe it to Carl for the first universal joint - a part that we consider it an absolute necessity; by that time, it had to be invented.

Undoubtedly, nobody could beat the craftsmanship and the quality of the Swedish brand, but the pricetags were always on the higher range. MerCruiser managed to make boating affordable to more people, by offering a less refined version of outdrives. Their powerplants were the same when it comes to petrol engines: 4-cylinder, 6-cylinder, and 8-cylinder engines, all derived from Chevrolet. All of them had adaptations in order to use them in the marine environment, yet the parts branded as MerCruiser have always been cheaper. This, along with their simplicity to maintain them, is the main reason of their popularity.
